More Info

Last year’s Ballantrae Smugglers’ Festival was voted a great success by locals and visitors alike.  As part of this year’s Festival the Carrick Gazette is sponsoring a Creative Writing Competition in partnership with the Ballantrae Development Group who organise the Festival.

You are invited to submit a fictional short story – not poetry – on the subject of “Smuggler!”

The competition is open to anyone living in the UK and will involve 3 categories:

  • Children under 12 years of age on 1 July 2014 any number of words up to 500 words including the title
  • Children 12 years or over and under 18 years of age on 1 July 2014 maximum 500 words including the title
  • Adults (18 years or over) on 1 July 2014 maximum 500 words including the title

Your entry must be typed in 12pt font (younger children may need help with this) to fit on one side of A4. Entries can be electronic or on paper.  Please include your name, age (if under 18) address (including postcode) and telephone number on a separate sheet.  This should be clipped (not stapled) to the entry if you are sending your entry on paper.  This makes it easy for admin staff to remove it and record the details before passing on anonymous entries to the judges.  Electronic entries should be sent as an attachment in Microsoft Word.  A word count must be given at the end of your entry.

Entries (one per person) should be sent to creativewriting@ballantrae.org.uk or posted to Creative Writing Competition, Ballantrae Smugglers’ Festival, 42 Foreland, Ballantrae, KA26 0NQ to arrive before 5pm on 30 June 2014 when competition entries will close.  Entries received after this time will not be included in the competition.  Entries will not be returned so please keep a copy.  All entries must be the original work of the entrant.  All entries must be in English, must not have been previously published, and must be the work of the submitting author.

The judging panel will include Dr Tom Smith (local author), Denis Reid (former Chairman of Stranraer Writers’ Club and local historian), Frances Wilkins (social historian and author), Ann Burnett (Ayr Writers Club), Andrea McNicoll (author), and David Walker (Carrick Gazette). The judges’ decision is final and no discussion or debate will be entered into with authors.

The winners will be invited to attend an event on the evening of Friday 22 August in the Ballantrae Community Hall which will be part of the “Ballantrae Smugglers’ Festival” during which the prizes will be awarded and the winning entries will be read out. The winning entries will be reprinted in the Carrick Gazette during August and September 2014.
